For the first time hydrogen is used at the Olympics in Tokyo

The long-awaited Olympic Games in Tokyo started today, which are also a spotlight on hydrogen - the fuel of the future.

For the first time in the history of the Games, both the Olympic and Paralympic cauldrons in Tokyo are fueled by hydrogen. Hydrogen will also be used in torches for part of the Olympic torch relay.

In addition, 500 Toyota's Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell cars will help in servicing the Games.

Japan is using the Olympic Games as an opportunity to accelerate the growth of its hydrogen ambitions. Under Japan’s hydrogen vision, the country has set a target of 800,000 fuel cell vehicles by 2030 and a network of filling stations. There are currently 135 hydrogen refuelling stations in Japan, more than any other country.
