The Government has approved the goals of Ukraine's climate policy until 2030

On Friday, July 30, 2021, the Government approved Updated Ukraine’s Nationally Determined Contribution to the Paris Agreement.

The document aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 35% by 2030 compared to 1990.

“Through decarbonization & RES development, we intend to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 35% against 1990 level. Ukraine moves forward united with EU & USA in fighting climate change”, said Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal.

Among the main measures to achieve this indicator in the next 10 years:

  • modernization of energy and industrial enterprises;
  • development of renewable energy sources;
  • energy efficiency measures in all sectors of the economy from production, transportation to consumption;
  • thermal modernization of buildings;
  • increasing the share of organic agriculture and resource-saving agricultural practices;
  • electrification and renewal of transport;
  • introduction of a waste management hierarchy;
  • increasing forest cover and forest management reform.

The strategic goals of decarbonisation and a consistent approach to their achievement are a logical continuation of Ukraine's European integration course.

According to Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishyna, the decision made by the Government is important for:

  • Development of the economy of the future - minimization of emissions and pollution of ecosystems. Progress in this direction is important for the development of further trade with the European Union, which has already presented plans for the introduction of a CBAM.
  • Joining Ukraine to a club of global players who are currently joining forces to contain climate change. The EU has announced its intention to become the world's first climate-neutral continent, so further European integration of the country is impossible without a structural adjustment towards a clean and carbon-free economy. Ukraine's goal is to achieve climate neutrality by 2060.
  • Maintaining a comfortable climate.
